Hook approach determines how much of the nominal crane area can actually be served. A crane may have adequate capacity and span yet fail to reach machines, storage positions or process points because side or end approach was not defined early.

Side approach is influenced by trolley and girder geometry. End approach depends on end carriages, buffers, limits, runway ends and required safety clearances. Columns, walls, roof steel and process equipment must also be included in the working-envelope review.

The quotation brief should state the required hook working envelope, not only the building span. Low-headroom, top-running trolley, cantilever or special arrangements may improve reach, but should be compared with structural loads and maintenance access.
